Social & Painting Event (Gorleston)
July 3 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
IEA MEMBERS & FRIENDS SOCIAL & PAINTING EVENT (GORLESTON) Sunday 3 July @ 11am
11am: Meet up at the Pier Hotel for coffee for the plein-air partakers. Give directions for those unfamiliar with the location, then off we go.
3pm: Meet at Pier Hotel for tea & cakes social gathering, for both plein-air painters and those who just want the social side!
Facilities: There are good, clean public loos next to the Pier Hotel. There are numerous food and drink outlets in this area, which is at the start of the promenade. They cater for both sit-down dining and take-aways.
Subjects for painters: There are lots of possible subjects to paint, including the beach and sea, buildings, and the river area – mostly industrial. It all depends a bit on the weather of course!
- Former Harbourmaster’s on South Pier.
- Red brick Pavilion Theatre.
- White art-deco circular Ocean Rooms.
- The old lighthouse building.
- Pier Hotel – scene of rooftop concert in 2019 film “Yesterday” (overlooks beach).
- Lifeboat stations (2!) half-mile upriver.
- Power station a bit upriver.
There are nice views along a mile of the river at various points between the Pier Hotel and just past the power station, with a broad rough grassed area along parts (it forms part of the Norfolk Coast Path). There is a high flood-protection wall however, making views awkward from a sitting position.
Car Parking: There is lots of free parking in the vicinity of the Pier Hotel, but spaces nearest the beach can fill up a bit on nice warm days! If all else fails, there is a large pay-and-display car park behind the hotel, which has 132 spaces, and costs a maximum of £6 for a whole day. Bring coins! Most people should be able to find a free spot.
