A great time was had by all on the last IEA workshop at Cley.
Reactions from people on the John Tookey Workshop praised the tutor, the venue with parking, the snacks and the pop-up charity sandwich bar.
John was at his best, joking and explaining while he demonstrated each day. He was self-depreciating, so no-one felt overawed. Yet his paintings were masterly (so much so that a very accomplished watercolorist on the course did his best to “do a Tookey” and do one of his scenes ). John was also endlessly supportive and helpful. We all left feeling cheered and encouraged.
One painter called John “one of the best tutors I’ve ever had”. She said he visited her three times in two hours while she was painting around the back of Cley Mill and made practical and helpful suggestions.
Another said that it had been revelationary for her – she’d painted in oils for years, but bought watercolours for the course and took to them “like a duck to water”. And her combined watercolour and pastel pictures were a joy, too.
One painter said she’d happily come again, another that the course did what “it said on the tin”. IEA Associate member Suzanne Lawrence was on hand with fab cakes and advice about where to paint and the quickest way to get there. Who knew that Cley had so many shortcuts.
We hope to book John again next year.
