“Entrée of the Pas de deux” – Pastel painting by Michele Ashby
We were captivated by the subtlety of tone within this pastel painting which has been beautifully achieved through the play of light and shade. The painting contains good use of ‘token’ highlights and Michele has shown confidence in allowing dramatic areas where the power of light can be offset against deep shadow.
Michele has used perspective to great effect by the careful placement of the figurative studies in the immediate foreground which provides a charming
glimpse ‘across stage’ towards another young ballet dancer. As they await their cue, the stance of the two young girls depicts a totally expected degree of nervousness that they would be experiencing. This contrasts sharply with the gently assured, supportive stance of their mature tutor. This painting is masterfully titled, capable of telling its own story and bears a modest signature … so often a good painting is visually disturbed by an overbearing signature!
